Dear Parents,
Over the next 11 weeks those of us in 4th
Grade will be following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on ‘Rivers’.
This unit of work is part of the International Primary
Curriculum. This
new curriculum sets out very clearly what children will learn – the learning goals – in three different areas:
1.
The learning goals for each of these subjects are
very interesting and challenging for young children.
2.
Personal development – the
characteristics which will help children become more responsible and independent learners.
3.
International understanding – which
will help children develop both a sense of the independence of their own country and culture and the
interdependence between countries and cultures.
Each unit of work is based around specific targets
derived from the learning goals for one
or more of the subjects.
During this unit we will be focusing on Geography,
Science, Technology, History, Society and International.
In Geography,
we’ll be finding out:
• How the shape of a river is always changing
• How it changes the land through which it
flows
• What
happens when it floods
• What
uses people make of rivers
In Science,
we’ll be finding out:
• Where water comes from
• How to
grow a stalactite
• How to
clean water
• How water can be used to
make
power
• How rivers provide important habitats for wildlife
In Technology,
we’ll be finding out:
• How bridges
are built and then putting what we have learned into practice with ‘the great bridge-building challenge’
In History,
we’ll be finding out:
• About
the importance of the River Nile in every aspect of life in Ancient
Egypt
In Society and International,
we’ll be finding out:
• That rivers still have an
importance in the everyday life of people across the world, and
we’ll be looking at the
effect of river management for communities and for countries when rivers are
dammed
• We will be finding out why
we all need to
use less water
All of the work we are going to do has
been specially written to help your child reach the learning goals. Children
will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating, working on their own and
working in groups. We will be checking to see how well your child has learned through
particular activities and asking children to explain their work, perhaps to
you.
We already know the interest you take
in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work they
have done as the term progresses and let them teach you.
If your child has some work to
research, please help them, but without actually doing the work. If you have
the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme please take it,
but your enthusiasm and interest is most important.
By the end of the unit, we hope your
child has achieved all of the learning targets. We hope they have had an
enjoyable time in the classroom. And we hope you have enjoyed seeing your child
work with enthusiasm. If you have any comments about the work your child has done,

Estimados Padres de Familia:
Durante las próximas 11 semanas, todos en 4º grado
estaremos estudiando una unidad de trabajo cuyo tema se enfocará en ‘Rios’.
Este nuevo currículum establece claramente
lo que los alumnos van a aprender, sus metas de aprendizaje, en tres diferentes
áreas:
1. Las materias del currículum — los objetivos de
aprendizaje de cada una de estas materias aseguran el apropiado rigor académico
y desafío adecuado para nuestros alumnos.
2. Desarrollo Personal — las características que le ayudarán a
los niños a volverse alumnos responsables e independientes.
3. Entendimiento Internacional — el cual ayudará a
los niños a desarrollar un sentido de la independencia de su propio país y su
cultura y la interdependencia entre países y culturas.
Cada unidad de trabajo está fundamentada alrededor de objetivos específicos
derivados de las metas de aprendizaje y de una o más materias.
Durante
esta unidad, nos estaremos enfocando en Geografía, Ciencia, Tecnología,
Historia, Sociedad e Internacional.
En Geografía, aprenderemos:
• Como
el cauce de un rio esta en constante cambio
• Como
este modifica la tierra por la que corre
• Que
pasa cuando se desborda
• Que
uso le dan las personas a los ríos
En Ciencia,
aprenderemos:
• De
donde viene el agua
• Como
crear una estalactita
• Como
limpiar el agua
• Como
se puede utilizar el agua para generar energía
• Como
los ríos proveen un importante hábitat para la vida silvestre
En Tecnología,
aprenderemos:
• Como
se construyen los puentes y luego pondremos en práctica lo que hemos aprendido
con “el gran reto en la construcción de
puentes”
En Historia,
aprenderemos:
• Acerca
de la importancia del Rio Nilo en todos los aspectos de la vida del Antiguo
Egipto
En Sociedad e Internacional, aprenderemos:
• Que los ríos tienen gran importancia en la vida diaria
de las personas de todo el mundo, y conoceremos los efectos que tienen los ríos
en las comunidades y paises donde los ríos tiene represas.
• Porque
todos necesitamos utilizar menos agua
Todo
el trabajo que haremos ha sido especialmente preparado para ayudarle a su hijo
a alcanzar los objetivos de aprendizaje. Los niños leerán, investigarán,
escribirán, ilustrarán, trabajarán solos
y en grupo. Estaremos pendiente de ver que tan bien su hijo ha aprendido por
medio de distintas actividades y pidiéndole que explique su trabajo, en algunas
ocasiones, a ustedes.
Ya conocemos el interés que usted tiene en el trabajo de su hijo. De ser
posible, por favor discuta con su hijo el trabajo que ha hecho conforme avanza
la unidad, y si es posible, déjelo que le enseñe.
Si su hijo tiene algún trabajo de investigación, por favor ayúdelo, pero
sin hacerle el trabajo! Si tiene la
oportunidad de ahondar en sus ideas sobre este tema, por favor hágalo aunque su
entusiasmo y su interés son lo mas importante.
Para el final de la unidad, esperamos que su hijo haya alcanzado todos
los objetivos de aprendizaje y que haya disfrutado de su tiempo en el
aula. Esperamos a la vez que usted haya
disfrutado viendo a su hijo trabajar con entusiasmo. Si usted tiene algún
