Responsible children in 4th grade

Congratulations to:
Oscar Santamaria, Jose Miguel Jiménez, Gabriela López, Juan Diego Tona

Children who are responsible are independent and confident and are able to use their own

initiative to control and manage their lives. Teaching children to take responsibility is an

important life skill. For the past few weeks in Upper Primary we have been working with

the Value: Responsible. On Friday the 20th of September, we recognised the students 
who have excelled in demonstrating this value at school.

Well done to all of them!!

Week 23^rd Sept- 27^th Sept.

IPC

In pairs children will be investigating what human activities are carried out in the different parts of a river: upper, middle and lower. They will also work in pairs to choose an important river and share with the rest of the class what they found out.

They will also investigate how high tides affect the over flooding of a river.

English

We’ll continue studying the unit Speaking aloud.

Children need to review at home all the words taught in Spelling.

Math

Children will be able to:

Use efficient written methods to add/subtract decimals with up to two places.

Explore patterns, properties and relationships and propose a general statement involving numbers:
identify examples for which the statement is true or false.

Recall quickly multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and derive quickly corresponding division facts.

Science

Children will understand how the properties of air can be used to create movement.

They will be making a bar graph with the
information gathered from the experiment done last week.

Reminder

-Parent meetings with teachers are starting next week Monday 30^th September.

-On Monday 30th September we’ll have an Independence Parade for all Primary to close the civic month. Due to the weather it will take place in the Auditorium from 9.15 to 9:45 am.

IPC

Throughout an experiment they will be able to demonstrate the path of water through a river using: a tray, thick card, bricks, water, food colouring and sand.

English

We are starting a new unit called: Speaking aloud .

Children will be able to identify question types, recognise the impact of theatrical effects and understand ways to lead or support others in group work. As well as recognise impact of theatrical effects and explore how writers use language for dramatic effect.

In Spelling they’ll be learning/revising the 'trans' prefix.

Math

This week’s Maths lessons will be linked to IPC, we’ll be looking at capacity.

The children will understand that capacity refers to measuring a liquid and they will know that capacity can be measured using a measuring jug. They will understand that the units of measurement used for capacity are millilitres and litres and they will gain an idea of exactly how much one litre is and the different measurements leading up to one litre, which will help with future estimations.

Science

In Science children will be able to understand how gases are used in everyday life.

Children will make a rocket using toilet roll and cardboard which they will be using at school with an empty plastic bottle to demonstrate how the properties of a gas can make the rockets take off. They will be learning about how air can create pressure.

The McLay Fun Run will take place this Friday 20^th September. 4^th graders turn will be from 10-10:30.

IPC Entry Point - Making a boat (4th Quintanilla)

What are we learning this week (Sept 9^th- Sept 13^th)

·        IPC

Using blank maps of the world the children will be asked to draw in the world’s great rivers. They will record the journey of each one, beginning at its source and ending at its mouth where the river joins the sea, and label on their maps the sea or ocean that the river finally meets.

The children will be asked to mark the cities on their maps.

Throughout an experiment they will be able to demonstrate the path of water through a river using: a tray, thick card, bricks, water, food colouring and sand.

·        Science

Children are going to be measuring how much air is in the soil.

·        Math

-         Use understanding of place value to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10, 100 or 1000.

-         Use knowledge of rounding, place value, number facts and inverse operations to estimate and check calculations.

-         Extend mental methods for whole-number calculations

-         Explain reasoning using diagrams and text; refine ways of recording using images and symbols.

-         Use efficient written methods to add and subtract whole numbers.

-         Add/subtract mentally pairs of two-digit whole numbers.

*Math homework’s on Myimaths will begin next week. Children’s passwords for Myimaths will be given to parents at Back to School night.

This week children are going to continue studying Play scripts.

*Remember that children should be reading on a regular basis and parents should be signing the HCB.

Going with the Flow has been launched in 4th grade. As part of their entry point the children will be experiencing what rivers are like. Children were asked to design a toy boat to sail in the lazy river of Atlantis.

The world’s rivers are our most precious resource. This Unit studies the impact of the world’s rivers on people and landscapes in the past, present and future.

• In Geography we’ll be finding out:

-          How the shape of a river is always changing

-          How it changes the land through which it flows

-          What uses people make of rivers

-          What uses people make of rivers

• In Science we’ll be finding out:

-          Where water comes from

-          How to clean water

-          How water can be used to make power

-          How rivers provide habitats for wildlife

• In Technology we’ll be finding out:

-          How bridges are built and then putting what we have learned into practice with ‘the great bridge-building challenge’

• In History we’ll be finding out:

-          About the importance of the River Nile in every aspect of life in Ancient Egypt

• In Society and International we’ll be finding out:

-          That rivers still have an importance in the everyday life of people across the world and     we’ll be looking at the effect of river management for communities and for countries       when rivers are dammed

-          Why we all need to use less water

-          About sacred or holy rivers

English

In English we’ll be learning about conventions of play scripts, dramatic performance and writing play scripts.

Children should be reading on a regular basis.

Science

In Science we’ll be studying the unit ‘Gases around us’, we are trying to prove that gases exist and children will be involved in different activities to prove it as well as identification of solids, liquids and gases.

Math

In Maths we’ll be looking at:

• Counting in Steps

-          Counting from any given number in whole number steps, extending beyond zero when       counting backwards: relate the numbers to their position on a number line.

• Multiplication facts

-          Recall quickly multiplication facts up to 10x10

-          Identify pairs of factors of two-digit whole numbers

-          Use knowledge of number facts to estimate and check calculations

• Division facts

-          Derive quickly division facts corresponding to multiplication facts up to 10x10

-          Identify pairs of factors of two-digit whole numbers
